From Pennsylvania

Pennsylvania Bluestone

Selectively sourced. Built for patios, walkways, and pool decks.

"An East Coast standard — selectively sourced for Texas projects."

Pennsylvania Bluestone is a dense, blue-grey sandstone quarried in northeastern Pennsylvania. It has been the standard for fine landscape work along the East Coast for generations, prized for its consistent color, clean cleave, and excellent slip resistance.

The Block stocks Pennsylvania Bluestone in both Blue Select and Full Color palettes, in natural cleft and thermal finishes — sized for patios, walkways, pool decks, steps, and architectural detail. Custom cuts and slabs available on order.

Why bluestone

A material with character.

Slip resistant

Natural cleft bluestone has a textured, hand-split surface that grips well underfoot wet or dry — a primary reason it's chosen for patios, walkways, and pool decks.

Holds up in any climate

Pennsylvania Bluestone is dense and low-absorption. It handles freeze-thaw cycles in the Northeast and Texas heat cycles without cracking or fading.

Selectively sourced

We don't take everything the quarry offers. We hand-select for consistent thickness, true color, and clean edges — and pull anything that doesn't meet our standard before it ships.

Frequently asked

About Pennsylvania Bluestone.

Natural cleft has a textured, hand-split surface with excellent slip resistance and a traditional quarried appearance — the most popular choice for outdoor patios and walkways. Thermal finish is processed to create a smoother, more uniform surface. Thermal is often preferred for pool surrounds and contemporary designs where a cleaner look is desired.
Two main palettes. "Blue Select" is sorted for a cooler, more uniform blue-grey tone — preferred for contemporary projects and pool decks. "Full color" (also called full range) keeps the natural variation of the quarry, with greens, rusts, lilacs, and golds alongside the blue-grey.
Yes. Pennsylvania Bluestone is a dense, durable sandstone. It handles the heat cycles of a Texas summer without cracking or fading, and has been used successfully across Dallas–Fort Worth for decades in patios, pool decks, driveways, and gardens.
We stock Pennsylvania Bluestone in the most common landscape sizes — 12"×12", 12"×24", 18"×24", and 24"×24" pavers in 1", 1.5", and 2" thickness, plus matching steps and treads. We also offer pattern packs (irregular sizes laid in a random pattern) for a more traditional look. Custom sizes and slabs available on order.
Absolutely — and we love when projects do. A common pairing is Pennsylvania Bluestone for the patio or walkways alongside Lueders Limestone for steps, coping, or a fireplace surround. The cool blue-grey and warm cream-buff complement each other naturally. We'll help you spec thicknesses and finishes that line up so the transition reads as intentional rather than improvised.
